ONE of the best things that Bolton Council has done recently is to roll out 20mph speed limits on residential roads.

It’s not always been a popular move, especially with drivers who want to tear around generally and use residential roads as rat-runs to avoid busier main roads, but it is necessary.

The clue is in the name: this is where families live and that means small children who dart out and elderly people who may walk slowly. Driving for a short time less speedily is no real hardship to anyone, but it could save lives and reduce accident injuries.
