IF you live in Horwich you might have mixed feelings about the famous annual event the Festival of Racing there.

I’ve seen comments on the Bolton News’ website about the necessary road closures and subsequent “disruption” to life locally and you really just can’t please some moaners.

The reality is that it’s only once a year, brings trade, focus and prestige to Horwich and, as such, should be very welcome. It’s a tribute to the organisers that this year’s event on June 18 and 19 - when hundreds of cyclists, swimmers and runners descend on the town - is double its normal size.

Word has spread around the country there here is a terrific event worth entering, witnessing and supporting, and a fun weekend for all ages.

Youngsters can take part in their races and the whole event is well-planned and well-marshalled. If the organisers and Bolton Council can set the weather to “fine” that would crown it. It will, however, be a memorable time and I for one wish it well.
