WHILE this year’s Ironman UK event was as remarkable as ever the greater legacy for Bolton lies in its effect on children.

Anyone who witnessed the Ironkids event the day before could not fail to be both moved and inspired by those youngsters taking part.

There were thousands of them, aged three to 14, running hard in races ranging from a 500m course for the youngest to a 2.5km town centre course for teens. There were children who were plainly talented athletes and those who were just determined to get round. And the crowds cheered them on throughout, especially those with disabilities who earned the loudest applause of all.

Ironman UK and Bolton Council’s Sports Development staff deserve special mention - the former for the organisation, superb as always, and the latter for putting on all-day attractions like five-a-side football and boxing for youngsters.

The whole event proves that children willingly take to exercise if they’re enjoying themselves, love competition, and don’t need their iPad or phone to have fun.
