I WAS pleasantly surprised to learn that new public conveniences have been opened in the Victorian vaults of the Market Place.

Since Bolton Council closed most of the public conveniences in the town centre many years ago with the lame excuse that they were being frequented by drug addicts and sex perverts, there has been a distinct lack of facilities in the town.

The only public conveniences I know of are up on the second floor of the car park in the Market Place, and those in Marks and Spencers and BHS, all provided by members of the Storeloo scheme and not the council.

A large amount of money is being invested by Bolton Council and private developers in the town centre to try and attract more shoppers to the town, but unfortunately if you are a new visitor and need to spend a penny you will be walking round with your legs crossed looking for a sign post directing you to public loos, but are none to be seen anywhere in Bolton.

The Bolton Council web site states – “Bolton Council provide a number of public conveniences and are responsible for maintaining and keeping them clean”. Where are these public conveniences, is the council keeping their location a secret? Get your finger out Bolton Council, if you want to attract more visitors to the town, as well as a new transport interchange, children’s play area and tarted up shops on Newport Street you will have to provide more public conveniences.
