THE shocking death of Labour MP Jo Cox on the streets of her own constituency of Batley and Spen has sent shockwaves across the country.

Jo, who was also a wife and mother to two young children, was a very popular and well liked politician across the political spectrum and this has shown with the many sincere and moving tributes from all sides given to her all over the UK since her untimely death.

Politics and certain political campaigning at all levels these days seems to be getting more aggressive, more personal, nastier, uglier and more vicious then in the decent spirit of the past. It is not good for democracy as this is simply killing it and it is breeding more hatred and division and also it puts many people off voting and even registering to vote.

Whatever your politics, whatever your views and whatever we think about our councillors and MPs no one deserves to lose their life doing a job they care and feel so passionate about. They are human beings at the end of the day with lives and families like the rest of us.

On Friday morning on Bolton town hall steps it was very respectful to see that our Mayor, civic dignitaries, Bolton MPs, local councillors from all parties and Canon Matt Thompson Vicar of Bolton hold a moving ceremony to pay tribute and remember Jo and a very fitting and emotional tribute was made by Yasmin Qureshi MP.

It was good to see many of the public and town centre workers take time out to stand on Victoria Square and pay their respects.Jo made her maiden speech to Parliament in June 2015 and she praised the diversity of her constituency and said: "We are for more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us".

That fittingly deserves to be her epitaph and we all should remember these words more often in our society and in our politics too.
