A GRANDMOTHER took on the ice bucket challenge in memory of her late husband who died of motor neurone disease last year.

Viv Mills lost her husband of 32 years, John Mills, in August, 2013, after battling the progressive disease for 12 months.

Mrs Mills, aged 53, described the disease as “a life sentence” and blasted those who have spoken negatively about the ice bucket craze, which began in America.

The cashier, who works at the Co-operative in Tonge Moor Road, was one of six colleagues to take part in the icy challenge outside their workplace on Saturday to raise money and awareness for the disease.

Mrs Mills, also of Tonge Moor Road, said: “I know that there has been some negativity towards the ice bucket challenge but I for one am really pleased that it has brought so much attention to the disease.

“Unlike many diseases, such as cancer, there is currently no cure, no pain relief and no treatment for it. It is a life sentence for the person who has it.

“My husband used to suffer badly with headaches, and the ice in the water represents what helped relieve his pain.

“I went through it as well as John. It was heartbreaking to see his body breaking down when his mind was still so active.”
