BLACK history month – an event to celebrate the achievements of the African community across the town – is being launched this Thursday.

The opening ceremony, at the lecture theatre in Bolton Central Library, will kick start events and activities across the borough.

The events are being organised by the African Community Association of Bolton, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Nat Biney, chairman of the association, said: “A full month of events have been organised for Black History to celebrate and highlight the achievements of the contribution people have made to society and are still making in the world.

“We want people to come and join us.

“Events are taking place across schools in the borough and the community and will end with a final celebration.”

School pupils will enjoy drumming workshops, street dance, and tie-dye design workshop as well as trying their hand at African cuisine.

There will also be Ananse story telling at the YMCA on October 18 and a youth fun day on the same day at St Andrew’s Church in Tonge Moore.

On Saturday, November 1, the people of Bolton are invited to the final celebrations, where they can enjoy African and world cuisine with dignitaries at Bolton YMCA.

In the foreword to the programme of events, Cllr Cliff Morris, leader of Bolton Council, said: “Bolton is proud of its diversity and, on behalf of Bolton Council, I am pleased to support a range of events which help increase awareness of both new and established communities in the two.

“We are delighted to be part of Black History Month in Bolton and look forward to this year's programme of activities.”

The opening ceremony starts at 11am and those wishing to attend are asked to be seated at 10.30pm. It will go on until 1pm.
