SHOPPERS grabbing a bite to eat in the town centre ending up getting a health check from their ‘waiter.’

Customers at Subway in Crompton Place were given the once over by manager Shuaib Ishaq — who is also a qualified pharmacist.

The 34-year-old was promoting healthy living ahead of World Heart Day today in memory of his late grandfather.

Mr Ishaq performed blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checks on customers — two of whom he referred to their GP.

Mr Ishaq said: “My grandfather was an amazing man. He was like a second father to me as he lived with us for a time. He was always quite fit and healthy until he got into his later years.

“He had two heart attacks and a cardiac bypass before he died of heart disease. It’s not nice to see a member of your family suffer like that.

“I decided to offer the checks to customers to promote the charity. I had to refer two people to their doctor with high cholesterol. I think one of them in particular was quite shocked.

“The common misconception is that you must be overweight to suffer from cholesterol problems but it isn’t always the case.”

As well as the two-minute tests, Captain Custard entertained children by painting their faces in return for a donation to Heart Research UK.

And 50p from every low fat sandwich bought was also donated to the charity.
