A TRUCK driver inadvertently went above and beyond the call of duty this morning while working at Victoria Mill in Atherton.

The driver was transporting a skip filled with dirt which had been dug up to make way for the new car park when he got that sinking feeling in his back tyres before going up “like a dog begging for a biscuit”.

The mill’s landlord, Gordon Tickle, witnessed the incident and said it raised a few laughs from workers at the mill.

He said: “When we saw it we couldn’t help but laugh – it looked like a dog begging for a biscuit. He just went up, up and away.

“We’re extending the car parking and the truck’s back legs sunk into the dirt and up he went. The poor driver’s face was a picture.

“Another driver brought his big machine over and started taking weight off the skip until there was a centre balance.

"It was like a pair of weighing scales. We had to be really careful of course in case it fell down quickly.

“Let’s just say the driver was relieved but it raised a few laughs from the rest of us.”
