A MUSICIAN from Smithills is releasing his debut EP after a top music producer praised his work.

James Holt, aged 21, was given a boost by legendary producer Brian Eno for one of his songs, which then scooped a top award at last year's Noise Festival.

Mr Holt's track — Whatever Happened to John — was described by Mr Eno as "brisk, funny and exciting". He added: "Great drumming. This track feels fresh and exciting to listen to."

The songwriter, who is currently studying for an MA in music composition and is professionally trained in piano, guitar and cello despite being deaf, self-releases his debut EP, In The face Of It All, on Monday, March 2, which featured artwork from a Bolton artist Anthony Greenhalgh.

He will be launching the album at the Kings Arms in Salford on February 28.

Mr Holt said: "Since Brian Eno gave me the confidence boost last year it spurred me on to release my music on an album. The track Whatever happened to John is on there too, of course.

"This is the first time I have ever released any music properly so I really hope people like it."

The musician was recently invited to perform on BBC Radio Manchester's Introducing show where he met hosts Michelle Hussey and Natalie-Eve Williams before singing live on air.

Mr Holt said: "It was great to go on the radio, I really enjoyed it. They have also asked me to take part in one of their live sessions at The Ruby Lounge in the future.

"What I'm really looking forward to is getting a live band together because it's just me on my own at the moment so to have a band will be more representative of what's on the album."
