THE popular Olympus Fish and Chip restaurant has bounced back from a poor hygiene inspection to receive a four-star rating.

A health inspector visited the restaurant in Great Moor Street on October 15 and gave Olympus a "one" rating on the basis that the restaurant did not meet with some national food hygiene requirements.

Tasos Pattichis, the owner of Olympus, said he is delighted with the improved score, but says he is aiming for a five-star rating next time round.

Mr Pattichis said: "It's a good report and I'm happy with the rating. It's important for me and important to my business.

"The inspection in October really shook me up and alerted me to how this system works.

"It's motivated me to reach the highest possible standards and has kept myself and my staff on their toes.

"My standards are very high and I'm always striving to do more and more.

"The workers, like myself, are pleased with the four, but we want to achieve five next time.

"I have a brilliant set of staff behind me and they always want to maintain a high standard at Olympus."

Following the damning report in October, Mr Pattichis visited several other catering businesses to discuss their food hygiene ratings and how they were calculated.

Having spoken to these businesses, he has expressed concerns over what he sees as a lack of continuity in the way hygiene reports are conducted.

Mr Pattichis said: "When I saw some of the ratings that other businesses had received, I was saddened because, to me, they were unfair.

"The hygiene ratings across Bolton, I feel, are not very consistent.

"I struggle to understand how I went from a one to a four — that difference is difficult to assess.

"But I have a much better idea of how the system works and this will drive me forward."

A council spokesman said: "We re-visited Olympus Fish and Chip Restaurant as requested by the proprietor. We found the restaurant had made significant improvements in the areas highlighted to them and we are pleased that they have now achieved a rating of four.

"The standards are set nationally and we apply these to all premises that undergo inspection.”
