A MAN who glassed his brother's neighbour has been jailed.

Aaron Brennan hit Shaun Fryer with the wine glass on August 29 last year following a row about whether Mr Fryer had called his younger brother gay, Bolton Crown Court heard.

Brothers Aaron and Ethan Brennan had been out drinking in Manchester before they attacked 47-year-old Mr Fryer as they got out of the taxi at in Charles Street, Bolton, at 9.45pm.

A comment was made to Mr Fryer by Ethan Brennan, which the victim ignored.

But he was then grabbed from behind by Ethan before a wrestling match ensued, the court heard.

Aaron then went into his brother's flat and brought out the wine glass, which he hit over Mr Fryer's face cutting his nose.

Prosecuting, Gavin Howie said: “Mr Fryer says that a call was made to him by Ethan followed by a question why he had called him gay."

A neighbour, Adam Howard, came out and saw Mr Fryer on the floor with both defendants kicking him.

Another neighbour, Kieran Bird, saw the victim curled up on the floor, as the brothers attacked him.

Mr Howie added: "Medical assistance was called and the stem of the wine glass was found. It's clear that was the weapon that was used to inflict the injuries."

Defending Aaron Brennan Nick Ross said: "The defendant wishes it to be known he would not justify the use of a weapon. He said he was wrong and sorry and has been able to articulate that he will never use a weapon in a fight again. Let's hope it's the case."

Aaron Brennan, aged 23, of Forton Avenue, Breightmet, was sentenced to 27 months in prison for maliciously wounding Mr Fryer with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

Ethan, aged 21, was given an intense community order for 12 months with supervision, and a curfew from between 7pm and 7am, after pleading guilty to affray.

Sentencing the brothers, Recorder Robert Farley said: "Aaron Brennan, for your part in this matter you recognise that you have to go to prison.

"Ethan Brennan, you are in a different position than your brother."
