QUIZ show star Anne Hegerty was on hand to open a new function room at Smithills and Heaton Conservative Club.

The star of the ITV show The Chase, who is affectionately nicknamed “the Governess” on the programme, cut the ribbon to officially unveil the new £40,000 facility.

The room, which has been renamed the New Barn Suite, has been closed since October last year while work was carried out.

Secretary of the club Pam Parish said: "Anne was lovely, and spent a couple of hours chatting, and was more than happy to pose for photographs and sign autographs for guests.

"The evening was a great success, with around 100 people attending. The raffle raised £631, to be split between Bolton Hospice and The Brain Appeal.

"The singer, Brendan Decko was very well received, and our own club steward Paddy Farrell sang too, including a couple of duets with Brendan.

"The new room has generated a lot of interest and we are already taking a lot of bookings."
