ONE of Bolton's oldest residents celebrated her 105th birthday with a glass of wine and a tea party.

Former weaver Alice Booth marked the milestone with a visit from family, who joined her at Spennymoor Care Home in Ivy Road, Halliwell, where she has lived since 2012.

Mrs Booth was delighted to receive her birthday card from the Queen, and add it to her collection of messages from the Monarch.

She says the secret to long life is keeping active and staying as independent as possible.

Mrs Booth continued to work shifts as a barmaid even after she had retired, and said she has never smoked.

Her daughter, Christine Leather, aged 72, said: "She thought the whole thing was wonderful, she loved seeing all her family and was overjoyed with the day.

"She enjoyed a glass of wine, and we got an extra large bottle so all the family could have a toast."

Mrs Booth, a mother of two, was born in Blackrod and attended the former Methodist School in Manchester Road.

After leaving school she worked as a loom worker and when after retiring she worked as a barmaid at The Ridgway Arms in Station Road, Blackrod.

She was married to John Booth from 1936 until his death in 1996, aged 86.

Mrs Booth was a Blackrod resident all her life until she moved to Spennymoor Care Home two years ago.

She has two children, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Highlights of her long life include family holidays in Cornwall and cruises along the Mediterranean, and Mrs Leather said that her mother also enjoying caring for dogs.

Mrs Leather said: "She always loves to see the dogs, and my daughter brought round her little spaniel round, which she was delighted with."

Staff at the care home said Mrs Booth continues to join in with activities, and that it is a pleasure to care for her.
