YOUNG apprentices swapped the classroom for the boardroom and showed they could give the contestants on the TV show fronted by Lord Sugar a run for their money.

Enterprising pupils at SS Simon and Jude's CE Academy in Great Lever put what what they had learned into practice in their maths lessons to set up their own little businesses, selling everything from bracelets to monster cookies.

They displayed their business plans, showing how they had used what they had taken from their literacy, computing, design technology and even PSHE lessons.

Assistant head Janet Kelly, who organised the event with fellow maths coordinators Kathryn Southern said: "We introduced the new maths curriculum throughout school last September and there is now a real emphasis on children using maths in everyday life to solve problems.

"Our Enterprise Week was a really good way to put into practice all the skills we have been developing all year.

"Teachers asked their class to design and make a product to sell at the end of the week.

"They had to work out the costs and try to maximise the profits they could make. Over the week they were fully immersed in a variety of challenging mathematical problems all linked to real life situations."

She added:"All the children and teachers enjoyed the week and there was a real buzz throughout school.

"They made a wide variety of products including popcorn, cup cakes, bracelets, fruit smoothies, monster cookies and salt dough plaques.

"We were overwhelmed by the support from parents who were really keen to support the week.

"The winning class will be announced in assembly next week."
