STARS from the amateur theatre scene swapped treading the boards for collecting well-deserved awards at the annual Bolton Amateur Theatre Society (BATS) ceremony.

The glitzy awards night was attended by members from local theatre groups in Bolton and the surrounding areas, as well as special guest and patron David Thacker, associate artistic director at the Octagon Theatre, who was again asked to present the accolades.

The evening recognised the borough’s talent as more than 180 people applauded and cheered on fellow members as they picked up certificates and trophies to mark their hard work over the last 12 months.

David Thacker, BATS patron: "I love coming here for so many reasons. First of all I don't think that people realise what a fantastic range of work is done by the amateur societies In Bolton. The number of societies and the quality of work and rich talent - the number of people involved is amazing to see, and it's great to be a part of this big family of talented people.

"Since I have been at the Octagon I have been very keen to break down the barriers between us and the amateur community. I hope that we have done that. I spent six years as artistic director there and feel the two have a very good relationship now, so it's great to celebrate their achievements. It's also nice to sit back and enjoy the night and not worry if I have won or not.

"It is a great privilege to be here and I am thrilled to be the patron of BATS."

As well as celebrating each others' achievements, members dressed to impress for a night of socialising, dancing and having fun.

Mr Cohen said: "The event is really exciting because we have had a really good season with a mix of musicals, dramas and comedies as well as choirs and orchestras. Sometimes that can put an audience off but the standards have been really high and we have had some fantastic feedback from people.

"It's not just about accepting awards. People come here to network and help each other with things like props and wardrobe. It's probably the one time that everyone can get together and have a good time.

"Having David Thacker here for the third year is also fantastic. He lifts us up which is nice and treats us like professionals not amateurs. He sees us as bringing live theatre to Bolton."

As well as the traditional awards for best actor, actress, comedy, drama and musical, there was a standing ovation for Michael Rogers award winner Sandra Blythe, and a special Fellowship award was given to BATS chairman Paul Cohen for his service to the society.
