POLICE have launched an investigation after a man - named as Mark Carroll - died following a disturbance in Farnworth.

The 43-year-old died in hospital after being found barely conscious in Burnham Walk in the early hours of Saturday.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Carroll by his neighbours who reported hearing youths screaming and shouting in the area before his death.

A 29-year-old neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: "I heard screaming and shouting and I just presumed it was kids, it was a Friday night and that happens quite often.

But I woke up and I could hear a lady screaming and crying going up and down the road. That's when I saw the ambulances and police and thought it must be a bit more serious. It is tragic."

Police arrested an 18-year-old man following the incident just before 2am and are appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information.

Tributes were paid to Mr Carroll, who is believed to be a father, on The Bolton News' Facebook page.

Alex Gartell wrote: "RIP dad".

Sandra Louise Tomlinson said: "My thoughts go out to u Alax and the rest of the family and friends ?? rip"

Nancy Warburton put: "Rip mark love to all your family and loved ones xx."

Mark Berry added: "Love u to pieces mark heartbroken xxx."

One resident, who lives near to where the incident happened, said: "I did not know the family and didn't hear anything, but it is very sad."

A Home Office post mortem examination was due to take place yesterday and the dead man's family are being supported by specialist police officers.

Officers were on the scene throughout the weekend and the area was cordoned off yesterday as police searched for clues and spoke to residents.

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Jones, of the Major Incident Team, said: “We are investigating the circumstances surrounding this man’s death and are making enquiries to establish what exactly took place during this disturbance.

“The man’s family are being supported by our specialist officers at this very difficult time and we are keeping them fully up to date with our investigation.

“We are appealing for anyone who saw or heard anything that they think could assist police with our enquiries to contact us.”
