CAMPAIGNERS turned out in Bolton town centre to oppose the government's tax credit cuts.

Protesters held a demonstration in Newport Street as part of a national day of action organised by The People's Assembly.

The demo was held ahead of today's Spending Review announcement by Chancellor George Osborne and called for him to scrap proposed changes to working tax credits that could leave many families worse off.

The group were also asking the Chancellor to raise the level of the Living Wage he will introduce from next year.

Among the group was Bolton Green Party leader Alan Johnson, who said: "We expect Mr Osborne to announce cuts to tax credits in his spending review and we are asking him to think again.

"The Conservative government has said time and time again that it is on the side of hard working families, but these cuts will hit the very people they say they are working for.

"While we welcome the Chancellor's plan to introduce a new Living Wage for all employers, we think it should be higher than the £7.20 he is bringing in next year."

He added: "The independent Living Wage Foundation recommends it should be £8.20 per hour but we feel it should go even further and be £10 for everyone."
