MORRISONS has cut the price of petrol at their pumps to £1 a litre – for customers that spend £40 in-store.
The supermarket has dropped prices to levels not seen since June 2009 to coincide with motorists out and about on their pre-Christmas shopping spree, including Black Friday this November 27.
Despite predictions that fuel prices would break the £1-a-litre mark, this year’s downward slide has lost momentum in recent months.
Bryan Burger, Morrisons Petrol retail director, said: “Prices have been hovering above the £1 mark for months now and we believe that we can give motorists that feeling of turning back the clock and paying less than £1 for unleaded.”
Drivers of diesel cars who buy their groceries in Morrisons will also receive 7p-a-litre cuts off the pump price.
The last time that fuel prices were below the £1 mark in June 2009, Gordon Brown was Prime Minister and Slumdog Millionaire was the film of the year.
For a typical 50 litre car, motorists will save £3.50 every time they fill their car up.
Morrisons is knocking 7p off a litre from November 23 to December 6.
Customers who spend £40 or more in participating stores will receive a voucher that will allow them to pay the lower price.
