AN INVESTIGATION into what caused the death of a Radcliffe man found in a canal is set to continue today.

The body of Peter Grant, aged 48, of Farcroft Avenue, was discovered in the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal, off Bury Road, on the morning of January 24.

Police and paramedics were called to the local beauty spot, which is popular with walkers, after a passerby spotted the body in the water.

Mr Grant had been out with his girlfriend the night before he was found.

He left her house alone at around 2.30am on January 24 and told her he was going to walk home.

It is believed he fell into the water on the way home and police said they did not suspect third-party involvement or suspicious circumstances.

An inquest into the circumstances of Mr Grant's death is set to open at Rochdale Coroner's Court in Heywood at 9.30am today,

The hearing is scheduled to last five minutes and then adjourned for a full hearing.

That is due to take place at the same court at 2pm on August 9 and is expected to last two hours.

The coroner will aim to establish who the deceased was, where he died, when he died and how he came by his death.
