BOLTON Council is being encouraged to mark Commonwealth Day.

The region’s UKIP MEP Paul Nuttall has written to chief executive Margaret Asquith asking if the council will fly the Commonwealth flag to mark the annual event, which this is on March 14.

He said: "I know the Commonwealth flag is raised at several town halls and I hope that this year even more will do so to commemorate this important occasion.

“It is important that we never forget that our friends in the Commonwealth are our kith and kin. We have a shared language, culture and heritage that far surpasses anything we share with continental Europe."
