ONE of Bolton's most senior councillors has signed a petition calling for a vote of no confidence in Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and says many other local Labour councillors feel the same.

Cllr Nick Peel, Bolton Council's executive cabinet member for the environment, said he was prepared to give Mr Corbyn a chance as leader but said a lacklustre referendum campaign means it is now time for him to go.

Mr Corbyn is facing a revolt from his shadow cabinet team today, with numerous resignations coming after the country voted to leave the EU.

Cllr Peel said: "I didn't vote for Jeremy as Labour leader but I accepted the result and was prepared to give him chance.

"I have not seen much evidence of leadership from him for the millions of people who are desperate for a Labour government.

"Even before the referendum I had not been impressed, but that campaign showed there is a vacuum in leadership for the party."

Cllr Peel, who backed Leigh MP Andy Burnham to become leader last year, said there are many others within the Bolton Labour group who share his views.

He added: "I am certainly not the only person in the party who feels this way, I think many others do."

He added: "Labour should not be a pressure party, we are a party whose number one purpose is to be in Government and I think there are a lot of people within the Labour party who have lost sight of that."
