A TODDLER has been left with horrific burns to his hand after the laptop charger he was holding caught fire.

Two-year-old Lucas Hennessey picked up the charger pack, which was being used to power his mother Kelly’s laptop, and it melted into his hand.

Lucas was left with severe burns, missing skin and an exposed bone after Ms Hennessey peeled the sparking charger from his hand at their home in Kentmere Road, Bolton.

Ms Hennessey, who studies forensic psychology with The Open University, bought the Dell laptop off Amazon, which came with the charger.

Since the incident, Amazon has removed the product from its website.

Ms Hennessey said: “I was cooking tea when he was playing in the living room where my friend was watching him.

“He picked up the middle part of the charger, which looks like a small box, to move it and it made a banging noise before he started crying.

“My friend rushed to take it off him but it had melted and we managed to get it off before throwing it across the room – it was still sparking.

“I instantly ran his hand under the cold tap and we called an ambulance.”

Lucas was taken to Bolton Hospital, where he waited for six hours in A&E before being transferred to the special burns unit at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for three days before being released.

The mother-of-one must take Lucas back to hospital for the next couple of months to have his wounds washed and hand re-bandaged.

She added: “I felt so helpless and guilty when he was in hospital, he only picked up the charger to move it out of the way, you would never expect it to cause the damage it has.

“He will have to have physiotherapy for the next two years to be able to regain the movement in his fingers and has completely lost the sensation in his index finger. I have to do everything for him because he only has one hand to use.

“The hospital have kept hold of the charger for the time being and I have contacted a solicitor to deal with it on my behalf.

“He won’t be able to go to nursery for a good two months and will miss seeing his friends, I feel awful for him.”

A spokesman for Amazon said: “The product in question is no longer available and the third party seller has been suspended while we investigate the incident.”

A Dell spokesman added: "Dell takes all customer reports of potential product safety issues very seriously. We have received a report involving a Dell branded AC adapter, and as we do with all such reports, Dell will work to capture the involved product and conduct an investigation and we will take appropriate actions based on the results of our investigation."
