Double Yellows filmed in Bolton to air this week

‘Double Yellows’, written and made in Bolton, won the award for Best Entertainment and Comedy at the Royal Television Society North West last month.

The film also won the Short Comedy award at the Lit Laughs International Horror & Comedy Festival in 2022.

Childhood best friends from Bolton, Oliver Bowler, who wrote and starred in the short film, and Dan Sheader, who also starred, collaborated on the film.

The film follows Robbie, who is lost on his way to an anniversary meal with his wife after failing another job interview.

Without any phone signal or a clue where he's headed, he pulls over in desperation.

However, little does he know, it's about to go from bad to worse, as one by one a group of zany characters target him, seeming hellbent on ensuring he does not arrive on time.

The film, directed by Joseph Macaulay and produced by Callum Atherton, was shot in Bolton over five days.

Oliver said: “I’ve been acting now for roughly three to four years and I’ve been writing for the same time.

“Double Yellows was written three years ago but shelved.

“We looked for a location for ages. The premise of the film is that it’s meant to be in the middle of nowhere, a Bermuda Triangle-like place where nothing makes sense.”

He continued: “We found Falcon Mill in Halliwell and filmed it there. Local businesses were happy to accommodate us.

“They were really intrigued from start to finish, wondering why the cameras were there. It was an absolute blast to be involved with.

“We did crowdfund £500 and got it made. The good thing about working with somebody doing a film course at Salford University is they have access to the equipment.

“The film students who worked on it did it as an extra-curricular activity, but when the university found out, they loved it and invited us to their Bolton Film Festival showcase.”

Oliver added: “To get on at Bolton Film Festival and to have our material screened at The Light in Bolton and at Manchester Film Festival last month was amazing.”

On March 23, ‘Double Yellows’ won at the Royal Television Society’s North West Student Awards.

Oliver said: “It is a huge achievement. It could potentially be going into the national awards in London, which would again be a massive achievement.”
