A Monster Calls

Hollywood fantasy film A Monster Calls follows 12-year-old Conor, who seeks the help of a tree monster to help with his mother’s terminal illness.

Some scenes of the blockbuster hit, which featured Sigourney Weaver, Liam Neeson and Tom Holland, were filmed right on our doorstep.

Peaky Blinders

Slightly different from your usual gangster fare, this series is set in Birmingham and part of it was even filmed in Bolton.

The show follows the Shelby family and their gang, the titular Peaky Blinders.

Many episodes of the show were filmed in Bolton, with fans coming to Le Mans Crescent to spot Cillian Murphy when he was in town.

Cillian, who plays Tommy Shelby, was seen running out of the former Bolton Magistrates Court, down the steps on to the Crescent, which was transformed into a period street scene with vintage cars parked up.

Spike Island

Centred around Manchester favourites The Stone Roses’ famous gig on Spike Island in Widnes, the film follows five friends who will stop at nothing to get to their favourite band’s show.

Starring Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke, scenes were also filmed in the region, including in Salford, Manchester, Stockport and Widnes itself.

A fruit and veg stall at Bolton Market was even transformed into a flower stall, to reflect the aesthetic of the 1990s.

Released through the BBC last year, the horror series was filmed in multiple locations around the town.

Native Boltonians Paul and Michael Clarkson were inspired by their hometown, saying that the show was a ‘love letter’ to the borough.

Queens Park, Churchgate and Le Mans Crescent were just a few of the locations that appeared in the show, with many others featured.
