Beer connoisseur and passionate pub campaigner, Mark gives us his decision on the tastiest beer he has sampled in the last seven days.

This week’s outstanding beer came courtesy of the award-winning Unbound Brewery in Colne. This innovative, small, independent microbrewery has been rolling out an excellent range of modern craft beers since its inception in February 2020.

Their West Coast Session IPA, Footprints In The Sands Of Time(4%), brewed with Norwegian Kviek yeast , was typical of an innovative, modern-style, craft ale.

I just knew this dark golden, hazy offering was going to be a belting brew as I cracked opened the can. A delightful range of bittersweet aromas flowed out: lemon, orange, peach, and a hint of coconut filled the air.

There was more of the same identified in the flavours. The citrus notes of lemon and orange balanced perfectly with a peachy, pineapple and coconut sweetness. I also tasted a subtle floral flavour - and a hint of peppery spice.

More tropical fruit, floral and citrus flavours lingered in a quite smooth and pleasant bittersweet finish.

In conclusion, I was most impressed by the skill of the brewer, in balancing the complexity of flavours in this ale. It was refreshing, deep-flavoured and immensely enjoyable. A gem of a beer.
