Beer connoisseur and passionate pub campaigner, Mark gives us his decision on the tastiest beer he has sampled in the last seven days.
This week’s beer highlight comes courtesy of one of the nation’s favourite breweries, Adnams. The multi award-winning brewer based in Southwold, Suffolk, has been quenching the thirsts of ale lovers for more than 150 years.
One of their most successful and ever popular beers is Broadside. An iconic, relatively strong dark ale which has forged an impressive longevity, due to its immense popularity among discerning beer drinkers.
It presents itself dark ruby in colour with a white fluffy head. It has a rich aroma of fruitcake, dark chocolate and some caramel malt sweetness.
The complex flavours were sublime, smooth and well balanced. Raisins, caramel, bitter chocolate and hints of treacle and cola were all identified.
There was more dark chocolate, treacle toffee and some soft, spicy warmth in the bittersweet, relatively smooth and drying finish.
A remarkable, deep-flavoured, appetising dark ale that has stood the test of time over many years. A brewing masterpiece that was in excellent condition at The Clarence in Whitehall, London.
