A well-loved tearoom has announced that “with a heavy heart” it has had to close.

The Poppins Tea Rooms, on Lee Lane in Horwich, announced on Sunday that it was to shut its doors permanently.

Management have assured customers that deposits and gift vouchers will be refunded in due course and thanked them for their support.

A statement said: “With a heavy heart, we must announce the closure of Poppins Tea Rooms due to personal reasons and difficult times.

“It has been a hard decision for everyone concerned, but we would like to thank all of our wonderful customers over the years, our friends, and our staff both current and previous.

“Deposits and gift vouchers will be refunded in due course.

“We thank you for your understanding.”

The café, themed around the classic 1964 Disney film Mary Poppins, had earned a warm and loving customers base and has been a valued part of the Horwich business landscape.

The family run Lee Lane tearoom had also become well known over the years for its unique crockery and decor.

Well appreciated by customers locally, Poppins Tea Rooms was honoured as TripAdvisor’s Traveller's Choice Award winner for 2022.

This accolade recognised the café as one of the top ten per cent of restaurants worldwide.

This weekend’s closure has sparked further concerns about the difficulties businesses, especially smaller family run businesses are facing.

Cllr David Grant, of Horwich South and Blackrod, said: “Horwich is normally, especially for cafes, quite a booming town.”

He added: “We know that all kinds of businesses are struggling at the moment but one kind of business that seemed to be doing relatively well is our cafes.

“It’s a terrible tragedy whenever a business has to close and Bolton Council really needs to look at what they can do to give people the support they need.”

True to the café’s roots, the statement from Poppins Tea Rooms announcing its closure included a quote from the Julie Andrews classic:

"With every job when it's complete,

"There is a sense of bitter-sweet,

"That moment when you know the task is done,

"Though in your heart you'd like to stay,

"To help things on their way,

"You've always known one day it would be done."
