Bolton police arrest 4 as part of suspected drug smuggling operation

Arrests have been made and suspected trafficked drug parcels, disguised as sweets and soft drinks, have been traced to homes in Bolton.

Over the last 24 hours, police have targeted people believed to be involved in a criminal network importing drugs from America to the UK.

Customs officials both at home and abroad have intercepted parcels, disguised as soft drinks and sweets, which contained methamphetamine.

Working with international partners, police believe they have traced these packages to addresses across Bolton.

This morning, Tuesday, two warrants were executed in Bolton and two men, aged 29 and 43, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to import class A controlled drugs and money laundering.

Late last night, Monday, in connection with this operation, police arrested a 33-year-old man at Bolton police station, and a 36-year-old man at his home in Horwich.

Searches of associated properties lead police to recover thousands of pounds of cash, and weapons including rifles, knives, and nunchucks. 

A large quantity of methamphetamine was also said to have been recovered.

Specialist detectives from GMP’s Serious Organised Crime Group (SOCG), were supported by the Bolton Challenger team and Tactical Aid Unit (TAU), to execute the warrants.

Detective Inspector James Coles from GMP SOCG said: “This is an excellent example of collaborative work with international partners and specialist resources across the force.

“By intercepting these packages, we have been able to remove large quantities of dangerous substances from the streets of Greater Manchester and denied huge profits to organised criminals. 

“We’re alive to the methods criminals are using to import drugs and illegal commodities to the UK and we will endeavour to stay one step ahead of those exploiting this market.

“By disrupting and dismantling drug trafficking groups, we’re able to prevent the associated violence and deprivation that is inextricably linked to this trade, protecting our communities from intimidation and harm.”
