A pub in Westhoughton is coming together with a group of volunteers for a good cause.

Following the death of life-long Wanderers fan Iain Purslow, the Bolton Wanderers Remembrance Group (BWRG) teamed up with prominent defibrillator campaigner, Claire Axon – who runs the charity Minutes Matter.

Manager of Absolute Bar & Bistro, John McGinlay, says it as always been a goal for The Victoria pub – which he also runs – to have a defibrillator installed.

John will took on a walking challenge with volunteers,  which started from the Toughsheet Community Stadium to Blackpool Football Stadium to help raise funds for life-saving training and defibrillators across the borough.

He said: “It has always been a big thing for the pub to have a defibrillator.

“It’s such a brilliant thing to be a part of, and it helps raise awareness for a good cause.

“As a pub we want to give back to the community.

The Bolton News: “And we are continuing to try and be more a part of the community and be involved with things as much as we can.”

The money raised will go to funding first aid training to help support CPR, and training for Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

There are 14 volunteers taking part, and so far, they have managed to raise £5,500 (www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/john-mcginlay).

They have raised enough for at least four defibrillators but are on a mission to try and get more installed across the town.

John will be taking on the trek with his brother-in-law Charlie Jones, 18, is keen to be involved.

John added: “Everyone has pulled together, and it’s good to see everyone come together and do this for the community.”

Member of the organisation behind it, Andrew Bowling, says that it is more important than ever to have lifesaving skills, which is close to Claire’s heart.

Everyone involved are hoping to continue raising as much money as possible over the next couple of days.

The walk took place yesterday (Friday February 23) ahead of the Wanderers vs Blackpool match on Saturday February 24.
