A car crashed into a tree on a major road earlier today.

The crash happened on Church Street, Westhoughton, close to the junction with Seddon Street just after 5pm on the evening of Wednesday March 6.

A silver BMW appears to have been involved a crash with a tree, while police officers, the fire service and an ambulance were all called to the scene.

Cllr David Wilkinson, of Westhoughton South, said: “It could have been a collision, it could have been a clip.

“You’d be amazed, I’ve seen cars that are in bits because of clips and cars these days just disintegrate.”

He added: “I’m not saying that speeding was an issue in this case but a lot of accidents have happened in the past on that road.”

Church Street leads all the way through Westhoughton and leads off Chorley Road, making it one of the main arteries through the town.

Cllr Wilkinson said that the road can be difficult to navigate because of “kinks” in the surface and because of bends.

Church Street has been hit by several accidents in recent months and years, with an announcement made last January that bollards would be installed on parts of the road in a bid to improve safety.

These are set to be installed close to the junction with Peel Street.

Cllr Wilkinson said that he and his ward colleagues have frequently raised issues about road safety with the police and would continue to do so.
