A historic building which was badly damaged in a blaze is to be demolished.

The fire broke out at the Horwich Loco Industrial Estate in June last year.

Three fire engines were sent to Railway Road and were on scene overnight.

The blaze is thought to have taken place in one of the storage buildings with heritage significance which was built in 1886.

And now bulldozers are expected to move in shortly to take down the remains of the building.

It was previously reported that the site was under threat and now it has been confirmed that demolition will take place in the next fortnight.

Ward councillor Peter Wright previously wrote to Bolton Council urging them to save the building if possible and use old brick work in reconstruction.

But now he has confirmed demolition will take place imminently.

He said: "I have now been informed that the demolition of the building will be taking place during the next week or so.

"The demolition company will be moving in. Within a month it will have come down.

"It is very sad."

The Horwich Loco Works were built on land which was bought in 1884.

At its peak they employed more than 5,000 people and transformed the area into one of the six leading railway times of the country.

Railway production finally ceased in 1983 when the last railway workers left.

Cllr Wright has also been involved in the running of a foodbank in the nearby building which will have to relocate while work is done on it.

He added: "At the moment the food bank is next door.

"Construction work needs to be done within the location at Rivington House.

"We have spoken to industry leaders and will find another location at an office nearby."

Police and fire investigated after the break out of the fire.
