Bolton's new Youth MPs have been elected after young people across Bolton cast their vote.

Twelve-year-old Muhammed Ammaar Naser, from Eden Boys School and 14-year-old Shalom Wondiam, from St Josephs RC High School, will represent Bolton in the Youth Parliament, putting across the issues that matter to the young people.

Bolton Council cabinet member for children’s services Cllr Martin Donaghy said:  “As a council we want to encourage young people to get involved in democracy at an early age and for them then to understand the importance of voting once they are 18.

“Being a Youth MP is an excellent opportunity to represent the views of other young people.

“It is empowering for young people to be able to encourage MP’s and decision makers to make real changes here in Bolton.

“I wish Muhammed and Shalom an enjoyable and successful term.”

The process began in October last year when 10 youngsters from across Bolton made it through the selection process to stand as youth MPs.

Since then, all of the candidates have been working hard on their campaigns and training for the roles.

Muhammed Ammar and Shalom received the most votes.

This year, 21,570 votes were cast across the borough with Muhammed Ammar receiving 5,775 votes, and Shalom receiving 2,297 votes.

They will now serve in their roles for two years before the next elections are called and will act on behalf of young people in their constituency.

Youth MPs work on local, regional, and national campaigns throughout their time in office and get the chance to debate live in the House of Commons. 

Their work will also involve meeting with local decision makers, MPs, representatives from various charities and organisations that support young people in Bolton.

Muhammed Ammar and Shalom will also work in partnership with the rest of the Bolton Youth Voice vehicle to help make positive changes for young people in the area.
