A sudden thunderstorm left Bow Street in Bolton impassable in the summer of 1951.

The Bolton News: Bow Street, Bolton, flooded 1951

The drains could not cope with the amount of water that fell leaving the street flooded with water more than a foot deep.

This photo was taken the day after the storm and the road remained impassable to traffic.

You can see police in their rain capes warning the approaching bus not to attempt going through the huge ‘lake’ which had formed.

Houses and businesses in the street had put up sandbags to keep the water out. you can see a large group of children looking on - you can bet they were hoping to splash around in the street’s new ‘water feature’.
