A state-of-the-art suite at Bolton’s new £40M medical college could be named after a “health hero” named by the people of the borough.
This comes as the Institute of Medical Sciences on the grounds of the Royal Bolton Hospital prepares to take its first students while offering a video preview of what it could look like.
Now University of Bolton Vice Chancellor Professor George E Holmes has asked members of the community to come up with “health heroes” to name the institute’s simulation suite after.
Professor Holmes said: “The Institute of Medical Sciences is a project of national significance and will be seen as a flagship facility in healthcare training, so we thought it would be a fantastic way to honour a health hero in the Bolton community.
“We are incredibly proud of the community we serve and know there are some amazing stories of individuals who have gone above and beyond to help others.
“I look forward to reading the nominations!”
The new Institute of Medical Sciences was made possible with £20M “levelling up” funding from the government, while the remaining £20M investment was funded by the university.
Once finished, the facility is expected to train around 3,000 learners every year.
These will include nurses and other health care professionals, while the University of Bolton is also planning to apply to the General Medical Council for medical school status.
This will give them the right to train doctors.
The simulation suite will be found at the institute’s main site on the hospital grounds on Minerva Road, Farnworth.

A computer-generated video showing an inside sweep of the new facility gives people a vivid impression of what all this could look like.
Anyone interested in nominating a namesake for the suite can complete an online survey outline the person’s name, their connections to Bolton and why they should be recognised.
Nominations will close on Wednesday April 17 this year and can be made via an online portal.
The submissions will be reviewed by a panel made up of the three stakeholders behind the institute, the University of Bolton, Bolton NHS Foundation Trust and Bolton Council.
