Elections for the council are less than a month away with 21 of the 60 seats in the borough’s wards up for grabs in the poll.

Residents are voting to elect a representative in each of the borough’s 20 wards on polling day on Thursday, May 2.

There will also be an a second councillor chosen in the Horwich North ward where there is a vacancy after the resignation of Craig Rotheram last month due to ill health.

A total of 118 candidates in total are standing for councillor positions in each of the wards which make up the town.

The council is currently under no overall control but Labour have 28 of the 60 seats and currently lead the authority.

The Conservatives have 15 seats, Liberal Democrats seven, Horwich and Blackrod have five members and Farnworth and Kearsley First three.

There is one independent and one vacancy. The elections will take place on Thursday, May 2, from 7am until 10pm along with similar votes across the country.

Candidates from the Conservatives, Labour, and Reform/Bolton For Change will contest every ward with the Liberal Democrats and Greens contesting 19 of the 21 seats.

The Workers Party of Britain will be fighting to win in three wards while they are joined by a single UKIP candidate and five Independent contenders.

Other parties fielding candidates are Farnworth and Kearsley First, Horwich and Blackrod First and Westhoughton First.

The deadline to apply for a postal vote in this year’s local elections is 5pm on Wednesday, April 17. Residents have until midnight on Tuesday, April 16 to make sure they are on the electoral register and therefore entitled to vote.

To register to vote, go to https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

The government has passed laws which will mean changes to elections next month including the need for voter identification if voting in person.

If a voter is without relevant photo id they can apply for a voter identification certificate. The deadline to apply for this free voter ID is 5pm on Wednesday, April 24., to be able to vote at a polling station on May 2.
