A motorist is in hospital with serious injuries after the car he was in smashed into a house.

The horror crash took place yesterday night with emergency services called to Highfield Road just before 11pm.

The driver, a 20-year-old, man remains in hospital.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Officers were called to an incident in Farnworth, Bolton  at around 10:50pm involving a car crashing into a house.

"The driver, a 20-year-old man, is in hospital with serious injuries and thankfully no one else has been hurt."

Road closures were placed on and around Highfield Road.

The investigation into how the crash happened is ongoing.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Highfield Road, Farnworth.

“Two fire engines from Farnworth and the technical response unit from Leigh quickly attended the incident, which involved a car colliding with a house.

“Crews arrived quickly at scene and worked to make the vehicle and area safe. Two people were treated at the scene before being conveyed to hospital by North West Ambulance Service.

“Firefighters were in attendance for approximately one hour and ten minutes.”

Workmen were on scene yesterday assessing the damage- with the house cordoned off.

One man was litter-picking when he saw the damage to the property.

He said: "About 70 yards up the road there was another crash into a building which had been there for hundreds of years and to be demolished because it was structurally unsound."

One couple who live nearby are Yvonne and Seville Davis.

Yvonne said: "I heard a huge bang last night.

"I saw all the emergency service vehicles here."

Seville said: "I saw it this morning on the way to get my paper, I thought how did that car get there?"

Herbert Partington also lives nearby.

The 79-year-old said: "We have had a few crashes around here."

Although the cause of this crash is under investigation, concerns have been raised about safety of the road.

"The speed of the drives has gone up," said Herbert.
A spokesperson for Bolton Council said: “Our Building Control Team were alerted to the incident at Highfield Road last night and council officers coordinated for the property to be safely vacated and made safe and secure.
“The team worked alongside the emergency services, ensured that temporary building supports were installed, and ensured the occupants were able to access alternative accommodation.
“A structural assessment has been carried out and contractors are continuing to carry out any necessary work to make the building permanently safe.”
