Primary school children made pizza for their parents in a fun and educational day aimed at encouraging culinary skills.

The New Bury UCAN Centre recently hosted the successful Kidz 2 Cookz project, to educate and empower children from St. James Primary School in Farnworth.

The initiative saw 30 enthusiastic young chefs engage in a culinary journey as they made pizza from scratch for their parents.

Over the course of the project, the children delved into the art of cooking, mastering the preparation of four diverse dishes from simple kitchen ingredients.

Assistant director of customer and communities, Paul Lowe said: “I felt very privileged to be included in the final cooking session, which was very grounding for me and demonstrated the benefit of collaborative working between agencies and our communities.

"I was pleased the children got to show off their creativity to their family and teachers, and also showcased how they applied their learning.

"It was lovely to see the children inspired and take a real pride in what they had achieved. I know the children enjoyed the session and hopefully they went away feeling aspirational.”

Parents seemed to really enjoy the day as they watched their children cook.

One said: "Cooking is at once child’s play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love.”

Another parent said: "It's a great way to introduce and build confidence in a very important life skill."

Funding from Onward Homes and Bolton at Home played a pivotal role in realizing the project's vision.

Andrew Brown, Director of Housing and Specialist Living at Onward, said: “Working with partners such as the New Bury Vision Group enables us to do more for our customers and make a positive impact in our communities.

“We were delighted to support their Kidz 2 Cookz initiative through the Onward Community Fund, which has provided children from St James CE Primary School with the skills to cook nutritious meals safely at home.

"It was great to see the inspired young chefs use their new skills to cook up a celebration feast for their families at the session.”
