WANDERERS are on the verge of signing Aston Villa utility man Chris Herd on a one-month loan.
The Australia international, who can play across the back four or in midfield, should be registered in time to face Chelsea in Wednesday night’s Capital One third round clash at Stamford Bridge.
Herd broke into the professional ranks with Villa in 2008, making his senior debut in a UEFA Cup game against Hamburg.
He had spells at Port Vale, Wycombe and Lincoln City before returning to make his Premier League debut against Manchester United in 2010.
The 25-year-old has 42 Villa appearances to his name but played just twice last season and trained with city neighbours Birmingham in the summer.
Wanderers hope he can have the same success as another Villa loanee, Alan Hutton, who revived his career under Dougie Freedman with an impressive loan spell at the end of last season.
It is understood that the deal will initially be for 28-days but that both parties are looking to extend it towards Christmas.
