IF Breightmet United fail to clinch promotion from Division One this season, manager Simon Wilcox believes they will only have themselves to blame.

The Moss Park men moved up to sixth place in the table on Saturday with their second successive 4-0 win – following up their victory at Wilmslow Albion the previous weekend with a fine display at home to Beechfield United.

They have been in good form since Wilcox returned after briefly stepping down as manager, and the he is sure they now have what it takes to power into the Premier Division.

“I wouldn’t swap my players for any other lads in the division,” said the Breightmet boss.

“Knowing the standard of our main rivals, I would say that we should be good enough to win promotion without losing another game.

“Football being football, I doubt it will work out that way, but I believe we will win promotion.

“The lads are all capable of doing it and will only have themselves to blame if they don’t.”

Wilcox admitted he had to remind his players of their superiority after they went into the break on Saturday with only a slender 1-0 advantage.

Left-back Junior Ralphson put them in front after following up a move into the box before firing a volley past the visiting keeper.

After a half-time talking to, they turned their dominance into goals.

Kurt Farlow beat his own team-mate, man-of-the-match Jordan Mulligan – to a long ball to tap in the second goal five minutes after the re-start.

Dave McShane headed in Breightmet’s third on the hour before strike partner Kyle Bailey found the top corner with a 25-yard strike 10 minutes later.

“The difference between now and the start of the season is that we are playing as a team,” added Wilcox.

“Everyone knows their role and what is expected of them.

“Our big players are all clicking at the same time and everyone is playing for each other.

“We could easily have had three or four more goals on Saturday and on that form I don’t see how any other team in this division could have stopped them.”

Pennington picked up their second win of the season, beating Chadderton Reserves 3-2 thanks to a late winner by Ross Farrington – one of five 16 year-olds in the side – after Kyle Giles and Steve Anderton had both netted equaliser.

Tony Lewis scored twice for Leigh Athletic but they proved second best at home to leaders Uppermill, who ran out 6-2 winners.

In the Premier Division, Hindsford maintained their unbeaten record with a 3-1 win at home to AFC Monton.

Connor Payne put them ahead with a superb solo run and finish, but Monton equalised after the break.

Manager Barry Massey was then forced into making a couple of changes after Callum Jones and Mark Chilton picked up ankle injuries, but the switch proved an inspired one as substitute Tom Valentine scored twice to leave Hindsford well placed in third position.
