NEIL Lennon hinted the New Year could bring more than fans bargained for if his side can continue climbing the table through December.

While the Wanderers boss has kept his transfer market aspirations close to his chest since arriving at the Macron Stadium, he indicated for the first time yesterday he intends to get very busy in the next window.

In fact, he warned Whites fans to expect a “mad rush.”

Not only is Lennon looking to tie down some of the key first teamers who are coming out of contract at the end of the season, and able to speak with other clubs as of next month, he is also planning to spend if the right players come along.

And while the Northern Irishman also admits he could sell on players to raise cash to re-shape his squad, the promise of some January transfer activity will undoubtedly cause a stir among the Wanderers faithful.

Lennon freely admits his side can help themselves by maintaining some consistency over the six remaining games in 2014, which starts with a home clash against Huddersfield Town tomorrow.

He refuses to set targets but with the mid-table Terriers now within striking distance, the manager is only looking one way in the table.

“They are mid-table, we go level on points with them if we win,” he told The Bolton News. “That’s fine. It’s little steps for us at the minute, slowly but surely up the table.

“It doesn’t really come into the equation when we’re taking about new contracts for players but obviously if they feel there has been a change in fortune, they might want to stick around for a bit longer.

“We do have a lot of players coming out of contract and that’s something that has to be addressed one way or the other.

“But January is going to be very important. I want to hold on to some players but also get some money in for others if I can. I also want to recruit the right ones as well.

“Going forward we want to add players and we’ve already had plenty of names thrown at us who appeal to me. But we can’t do anything until January so like every other club it’s going to be a mad rush right up to the 31st.”

Huddersfield Town have recovered from a fairly dreadful start since appointing Chris Powell as manager.

The Yorkshiremen lost five of their first eight games – the first of which, a 4-0 home reverse against Bournemouth, saw Mark Robins sacked unceremoniously on the opening weekend of the season.

Their more recent form has been encouraging, with two defeats in the last nine.

Lennon believes three points are there for the taking if his side can improve upon a patchy display at Blackpool last time out.

“Looking at it, Saturday becomes really important for us for a number of reasons,” he said. “Keeping the momentum going is a big thing.

“I was disappointed with the first half last weekend against Blackpool. I would like to see an improvement on that.

“Our home form has been good. It’s important that we try and maintain that against a team that has got a new manager in themselves and have been going pretty well.”

It remains to be seen whether Wanderers can match the kind of high-tempo football that swept aside Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic within a week in their last stint at home.

There were no complaints about attacking potency back then, but a rather tepid display at Bloomfield Road last weekend has raised some concerns about the number of goals in the team.

With last season’s top scorer Jermaine Beckford now out on loan at Preston the emphasis shifts on to Craig Davies, Max Clayton and Joe Mason as the obvious source of attacking potency, at least until Eidur Gudjohnsen seals a deal.

Lennon admits his side will have to be sharper than they were at Bloomfield Road to make an impression in tomorrow’s opponents.

“On one hand I was very pleased with last weekend because of what they did in the second half,” he said. “There is real character in these players and when they went down to a very good goal they responded very well.

“But it is vital that we try and keep a sense of consistency in our performances, it can’t dip in and out.

“I think we dominated the second half against Blackpool without really causing them too many problems and that’s something we definitely have to address.”
