EVERGREEN Eidur Gudjohnsen scored on his return for Iceland on Saturday to put them second in their European Championship qualifying group.

After reversing his decision to retire from international football, the 36-year-old Wanderers striker scored the first in a 3-0 win in Kazakhstan, which puts Iceland in an excellent position to qualify from Group A.

They currently stand five points ahead of Holland and Turkey at the halfway stage but face leaders Czech Republic in Reykjavik in June.

Gudjohnsen is already his country’s leading goalscorer – his strike in Kazakhstan his 26th in 79 appearances.

But Saturday’s opener was the first time he got on the scoresheet for Iceland since May 2009, when he netted against Norway in a World Cup qualifier.

Elsewhere, Whites loanee Simeon Slavchev came on as a late substitute for Bulgaria as they drew 2-2 with Italy.
