MICHAEL Cayton had an emphatic victory in Monday's seven-mile Wray Caton Fell Race.

The outstanding performance saw him finish a minute and a half clear of his nearest challenger in 43mins 10secs.

The manner of his victory suggested he could be heading back into the kind of form which saw him win titles and international honours as a teenager.

Evergreen Paul Muller had a rare excursion onto the fells to finish eighth overall and second veteran over-50 in 49:04 in a race which had 1,100 feet of ascent.

Five Harriers took part on Saturday amongst the 243 finishers in the aptly named Cake Race near Saddleworth, a 10-mile fell race (1,700 feet of ascent) with opportunities for fast times followed by eating cake.

Results: 36 Nick Kelly (V45) 1.18.29, 37 Gary Chadderton (V50) 1.18.31, 44 John Monks (V60) 1.20.15, 47 Doug Fleming (V55) 1.20.41, 86 Sandra Kelly (F45) 1.27.14.

Paul Boardman finished 51st of 183 runners in the six-mile Great Hameldon Hill Race with 11 feet of ascent near Accrington on Saturday in a time of 49:55.

Two V55s competed in the Coiners Fell Race near Mytholmroyd in West Yorkshire on Monday with David Barnes finishing 57th in 1:21:35 and Colin Waterworth 73rd in 1:33:18 amongst the 85 finishers over eight miles with 1,400 feet of ascent.

The venue also hosted junior races which counted in the 2015 English Championships with some good results for Horwich runners in the highly competitive races contested by over 300 youngsters.

Gordon Stone completed 70 miles of the LDWA Marshals 100-mile event in 27:34:00 over the weekend before retiring at checkpoint 10 in Chipping.

The event started at the Anderton Centre on Saturday morning and included a night time crossing of Pendle Hill in ferocious conditions. Of the 51 starters, only 34 completed the full distance including Burnden Road Runners' Kath Page in a time of 37:49:00.

The main event which attracts a limit of 500 entries from all over the country takes place over Spring Bank weekend and is the flagship event of the Long Distance Walkers Association.
