WANDERERS edged closer to the signing of Gary Madine after the striker completed a medical yesterday.

It has emerged the 24-year-old turned down a contract offer from recently-relegated Blackpool and interest from Birmingham City to sign with the Whites.

The deal is unlikely to be announced until next month when Madine’s contract expires at Sheffield Wednesday but with almost all details now finalised, he now looks certain to become Neil Lennon’s first signing of the summer.

Madine scored three goals in 15 appearances for the Seasiders and had indicated he would be prepared to stay at Bloomfield Road in League One.

But following the resignation of Lee Clark, both he and midfielder David Perkins – who signed for Wigan – have sought moves elsewhere.

The impending arrival of Madine is likely to mean Wanderers step aside in their chase for Spanish striker Sergi Enrich, who has been linked with a handful of clubs in the Championship.
