AS part of a weekly advice column 'Get fit for life' in the Your Sport supplement, the inspirebolton2action team at the USN Bolton Arena answer questions about how to stay active and improve your fitness.

This week, they talk about different classes on offer.

Q: What’s in a name? A selection of studio class names explained

A: Most gyms will offer a class programme and there are also stand-alone classes in halls and schools all over the town.

One of the most popular today is Zumba which is usually offered in both adult classes and children’s.

Zumba uses Latin dance rhythms and contemporary music and has easy-to-follow dance moves suitable for most people.

It’s dynamic, hard work and really fun – great for a cardiovascular workout as well as increasing mobility. It’s also very good for burning calories.

Studio Cycle Classes are based on static bikes and they often go under different names such as Spinning and Adrenaride.

Classes vary in length and they are offer a cardiovascular workout as well as developing leg strength.

The beauty of this class is that everyone works at their own level so no worries for you if you are a beginner cyclist. They will also benefit you if you want to do some cycling outdoors, building up stamina.

Body Pump classes use adjustable weights and barbells to tone and condition muscles whilst raising your metabolic rate for rapid fat-burning.

This class also has endurance and strength benefits.

Yoga classes focus on stimulating and relaxing body and mind.

There are many different disciplines of yoga, and also different levels, so check with the instructor which is the best level and discipline for you.

Pilates sessions look to improve core fitness and posture.

Deep abdominal muscles, used to support and control movement, are conditioned.

The classes help your posture and general health and wellbeing as well as making you stronger and are also a foundation for lots of other activities.

Classes vary in length from 20 minutes to 60 minutes so you may be able to fit a short class into your lunch break.

Expect the shorter classes to be an intensive workout!
