YOUTH sailor Alex Collins travelled last weekend to the Nottinghamshire Sailing Club of Attenborough for the 6th Supernova Open sailing event of the season.

The usual stiff competition saw Collins compete against 20 other experienced dinghy sailors from across the country and the gusty, changeable winds provided ample opportunity for mistakes on the water to be made.

However, he avoided capsizing and fought to stay in the lead for much of the days' sailing and was once again presented with the outright winners trophy at the end of the third race, making it three Open Series Event wins in a row.

Alex said: "I am pleased with the result and was looking forward to competing in tidal waters at Exe Sailing Club in Exeter at their 2 day Open Event next weekend.

"This will provide valuable practice for the Supernova class's Three-day National Championship in Paignton, Devon at the end of June, where approximately 70 sailors will congregate to compete for the three coveted trophies – The Championship winner, the Team Trophy and the Youth Trophy."

Alex doesn't come from a family of sailors and only took up the sport a few years ago.

He added: "Learning to sail is straightforward and not expensive.

"The club is always welcoming people new to sailing so I would tell anyone interested to go and speak to Bolton Sailing Clubs friendly team or alternatively get in touch by sending an email to newmembers@sail.org."
