AMIR Khan steps back into the ring tonight aiming to go one better than Manny Pacquiao and knock out Chris Algieri.

The Bolton superstar takes on the native New Yorker in his home town hoping to move a step closer to a dream fight with Floyd Mayweather later this year with victory.

Since Khan made the step up to 147lbs, he has impressed with points victories against Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander.

Now the 2004 Olympic silver medallist hopes to add Algieri to his list of victims in the early hours tomorrow UK time.

But he is not taking anything for granted against an opponent who took Pacquiao the distance in November despite hitting the canvas several times before his points defeat – his first as a professional.

Khan said: "When he fought Manny Pacquiao he kept getting up and battling.

"I would like to go one better than Manny and stop him.

"I want to beat him in a better way. I want to keep hurting him.

"He won’t go down six times against me and get up – if he goes down, I will make sure he stays down.

"He can be a tough fighter to put away.

"Yes, he is a fighter that goes down as he has in his last two fights but he comes back stronger.

"In his fight against (Ruslan) Provodnikov, he went down twice and got up to go on and win.

"He has a lot of heart and, make no mistake, he will come to fight and try his very best, particularly in front of his hometown crowd."

Khan is wary of Algieri but remains confident in his own ability, particularly after his mature displays in those last two outings in Las Vegas.

And he wants to stop Algieri inside the distance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

"It has been a long time since I stopped anyone," added the 28-year-old.

"It could happen in this fight, who knows?

"I think it will be a very fast-paced fight because we both have quick hands.

"I do think he will cause me problems but I am ready to deal with them.

"I need to hit him with some good shots early and see how he deals with it.

"It is about having a good game-plan and putting that into practice in the ring.

"I know what I need to do.

"He has a new trainer (John David Jackson) who has been good for him and I know what that experience is like.

"It can bring new methods and ideas and this will be a ‘new’ Algieri that I am facing.

"There is a lot of pressure on me because people only remember your last performance.

"It has made me work on new things because he is a different style of boxer – one which I haven’t faced in a long time.

"My last two fights have been against southpaws.

"Algieri is tall and moves a lot and he has good combinations of punches.

"I need to be smart on the night. I cannot afford any mistakes."
