GREENMOUNT head into cup final weekend top of the Bolton League and full of confidence says captain Andy Kerr.

The Brandlesholme Road men's routine victory against Tonge coupled with defeats for Egerton and Farnworth blew the title race wide open last weekend.

And the skipper, who is eager to land a league and Hamer Cup double in the club's final season in the Bolton League, admits it's a “good feeling” to be leading the division going into one of the most important weekend's of his career.

"We knew we had to keep on winning and hope the other teams around us slipped up," he said.

"I wasn't expecting both first and second-placed teams to lose on the same weekend but it's good to be back on top of the pile. It's where we want to be.

"It's definitely a good feeling going into cup final weekend at the top."

The skipper is now backing his side to remain at the summit by winning their league game against Walkden tomorrow before the cup final clash against Westhoughton at Eagley on Sunday.

Greenmount, who have defeated Tonge, Bradshaw and Farnworth Social Circle on their way to the final, beat Westhoughton by 25 runs in the league at St George's Oval last month, and Kerr is hoping his side can get the better of Rob Houghton's team once again.

"I guess we are one up on them," he said.

"But they are good side with a good professional so we certainly won't be underestimating them.

"However, I believe we've got plenty of depth in our squad and I'd back us to come out as winners."

The League's record-breaking wicket-taker Mark Stewart was captain the last time Greenmount lifted the Hamer Cup in 2011, and Kerr is eager to follow in the club stalwart's footsteps.

"It would be great to win the Hamer Cup in our last season before joining the Greater Manchester League.

"It's my second year as captain and from a personal achievement it would be fantastic to lift the cup."

Houghton has other ideas, however, after being buoyed by his own side’s recent good form.

Their pro, Qaiser Abbas, hit 24 not out and took 5-42 in Westhoughton’s 146-run victory at Eagley last Saturday.

Opener Mark Atherton scored a ton in that match, retiring hurt on 107, but the skipper said he should be fit to return this weekend.

“It was only a niggle,” he said. “Mark will be in for training this week and we will assess it but knowing him he will be eager to play.

“We went to Eagley with a game plan, with the Hamer Cup in mind.

“Our players will take a lot of confidence from their performance and should be able to take that into the cup game.”

Before the St George’s Oval outfit return to the scene of last weekend’s triumph they will entertain mid-table side Kearsley in the league tomorrow.

“We are only 10 points behind Greenmount in the table so there is still everything to play for,” added Houghton.

“We have been so close to the title in the last couple of seasons, so it would nice to go one step further and win it in the last year of the current format.”
