METRO B ultimately proved too strong for Farnworth C to win their first game of the season in the Bolton Badminton League.

The C Section clash was finely balanced as 5-5 before Metro dominated the level doubles kicked in and they won six of the last eight games.

Second-bottom Farnworth were first on the scoresheet when second pair Irene Crompton and Stephen Clegg won the first 21-14 against Metro’s Alison Peacock and Jack Milner who hit back to take the second 21-18.

Farnworth’s Carol Deplitch and Ajith Babu put their side ahead by beating fourth-bottom Metro's second couple Sue Jameson and Christian Burke 21-10, 21-11.

Metro’s third couple Joanne Holden and league stalwart Mike Horrocks levelled matters with 21-12, 21-15 wins against Ellen Knowles and Chris Baines.

And Metro continued their winning run when the first couples met, Peacock and Milner beating Deplitch and Babu 21-14, 21-19.

Farnworth’s Crompton and Clegg then turned the tables in the second couples' game, taking both games comfortably, 21-7, 21-8, against Jameson and Burke to make it 5-5.

Metro then pulled away, although some games could have gone either way, before Farnworth' Baines and Clegg beat Horrocks and Burke in the last clash of the night.

At the other end of the Section C table, Westhoughton C maintained their 100 per cent winning record with a 10-8 victory over Westhoughton D.

The tense struggle saw the result in the balance until the final game as seventh-placed Westhoughton D gave made their high-flying club rivals fight all the way.

The first pair of games were shared when the C team's second couple, Linda Redford and John Cole, won the first of two close games 21-19, and the D team's first couple Viv Coleman and Robbie Boardman took the second 21-18.

Playing first couple for the C team, Emily Tran and Adam Carney won both their games 21-8, 21-12, against the D team's second pair, Abby Edwards and Frank Stec.

The match swung back in the D team's favour when the third couples met and Becky Grime and Peter Nicholson won 21-19, 21-10 against Lauren Muddiman and Alan Green.

When the first couples met Tran and Carney won both games for the C team 21-12, 21-15 against Coleman and Boardman.

But the D team hit back again when the second couples met and Edwards and Stec won 22-20, 21-13 against Redford and Cole.

At the completion of the mixed games it was 5-5 and the match continued to swing.

Muddiman and Tran won the first pair of ladies’ games 21-16 with Grime and Coleman taking the second 21-18.

Nicholson and Boardman shared their games when they won the first of the men’s 22-20 and Green and Carney took the second 21-13.

Muddiman and Redford took the second pair of ladies’ games 21-13, 22-20 against Grime and Edwards to make it 9-7 ahead of the final match of the night which saw Nicholson and Stec win the first 21-14 and Green and Cole hang on to take the final game for the C team.
