SPORTS teams and individuals were flying the flag for Bolton at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards last week.

Astley and Tyldesley Cycling Club official Janine Paine was one of the lucky winners after beating stiff competition in the Volunteer of the Year category award.

The prize was a richly deserved award for Janine, who is a tireless and dedicated official for the club and she picked the title from British Olympian Beth Tweddle.

She was representing Wigan Borough as she won the gong ahead of Westhoughton Lions coach Geoff Sheelan.

The awards night took place at The Point, Old Trafford Cricket Ground, Manchester, on Friday, with more than 600 people present, who enjoyed a great night's celebration of sports personnel.

All of the Bolton representatives took their place at the ceremony after being recognised as the winners from the area at the district stage.

Tracey Jackson from Bolton Majorettes as she was up for the coach of the year title, while Bolton Gymnastics Club were in the battling it out for the club of the year.

Emma Spurling of Bolton Trampoline Club had booked her place at the event in the unsung hero of the year category while Kayli English represented Bolton in the disabled sports achiever of the year for her cycling exploits winning three silver medals at the national championships in a racing wheelchair.

While Anne Collier was in the running for the changing lifestyle title.

Talented cricketer Josh Bohannon was presented with a certificate recognising his achievements with Lancashire second team and junior sides.

Speaking about the ceremony, Westhoughton Lions coach Sheelan said: "It was really nice to be alongside some top sports individuals and coaches from other areas. It was great experience."
